Your out-of-office reply is telling strangers too much

Read your out-of-office reply before switching it on.

I'm in Spain until 18 October. Contact Sarah about the Anderson acquisition tells anyone who emails you where you are, when you'll be back, a colleague's name and a confidential project. That's a ready-made script for an impersonation call to Sarah.

What outsiders actually need

That you're unavailable, when you'll reply, and how to reach the business if it's urgent. Nothing else.

Use the internal reply for detail

Microsoft 365 and most email systems let you set a separate, more detailed reply for people inside your organisation. Put the handover information there.

If you'd like a sensible default template rolled out across the practice, we can set that up.
